3 Reasons A Patio Awning Is Great For Pets
6 January 2018
When you decide to have an awning installed on your patio, you and your family may reap most of the advantages. However, if you have some furry, four-legged family members, they get to reap the advantages just the same. Dogs, cats, and even some other less-common pets make their way into the house as a part of the family, but time outdoors is always healthy.
If you have pets in your home who love to spend some time outdoors, a patio awning can do a lot of good for them. Here is a look at a few of the reasons a patio awning is great for your pets just the same as it is for you.
1. Pets Who Are Sensitive to the Sun Can Enjoy the Outdoors
A lot of common pets are sensitive to the sun, specifically certain dog breeds. Brachycephalic breeds, which are commonly known as dogs with smushed faces, are a good example. These dogs can have difficulty breathing if they get too hot.
Even some cats do not fare well in hot temperatures, such as Persians with their trademark flattened faces. The Sphynx cat, which has very little or no hair, is actually prone to sunburn if left in direct sunlight. If you do have a pet that is sensitive to the sun, having an awning will allow you to take them outdoors without being overly concerned that the direct sunlight is going to hurt them.
2. Pets Can Play Outdoors and Be Protected From the Rain
Just because your pet has fur, it does not mean that it is okay for them to be out in the rain. You should keep your pet's fur dry as much as possible, whether it is a dog or a cat. Here are a few reasons why this is the case:
- Wet fur can harbor fungi and bacteria
- Wet fur can put your pet at risk for getting sick in cold weather
- Wet fur can be really uncomfortable and hard to dry
3. Pets Will Not Injure Their Feet on the Hot Concrete
Have you ever placed a bare foot on hot concrete? If you have, you know exactly how that can feel to the bottom of your feet - it burns. Your dog's paw pads are just as susceptible to being burned as the bottom of your own feet. According to P

Your dog's paws have footpads that can usually handle whatever a stroll or walk in nature throws at them. But a lot of human-made surfaces can burn your pooch's paws, including concrete, metal, pavement, sidewalks, and asphalt.
Therefore, hot concrete can really be damaging to your dog's or cat's paws, causing painful burns and blisters that could make it hard for them to walk. With an awning keeping your concrete patio protected from the direct sunlight, your pet can traipse around on the concrete comfortably, so you won't have to worry about them burning their feet.
In the end, a good awning over your patio is an incredibly advantageous addition to your home and your family members, even those who walk on four legs instead of two. If you would like to know more about installing an awning over your patio, reach out to us at Sunstate Awning
